Every autumn, I find myself drawn to the farmers’ market — not just for what I bring home, but for the sheer visual abundance of it. There’s a moment, standing in front of a barrel overflowing with mini pumpkins, when the whole season seems to concentrate itself into something you could almost hold in your hands. That’s what I was after with this painting.
What captivated me first was the variety. I love that no two of these little gourds are alike — the deep burnt orange ones sit alongside striped cinderella varieties in cream and rust, and then that one ghost-white pumpkin at the back, almost luminous, anchors the whole arrangement without competing with it. I kept coming back to the interplay between those cool lavender-whites and the fiery oranges. It felt like the whole color wheel of fall compressed into one bushel basket.
The dried corn stalks were something I almost didn’t include. But their pale, spiky energy shooting upward against that moody indigo background turned out to be exactly what the composition needed — a kind of wild, untamed contrast to the roundness of everything below.
The basket itself gave me real pleasure to paint. All that rough wood grain, the iron hoops, the way the light catches each slat differently. It’s humble and sturdy, which feels right. Fall abundance isn’t delicate — it’s earthy and generous and a little imperfect.
This painting is my attempt to hold onto that feeling just a little longer.
